About the Author

A native of Buffalo, New York, Willa Baranowski combines her experience as a teacher and her passion for quilting by teaching quilting across the United States. She shares her knowledge of Penny Squares and her collection of authentic 1900 Penny Square patterns. In 1991, she developed Willa Bee Studio, a line of circa 1915 Penny Square (redwork) embroidery patterns. The second book in the AQS Love to Quilt series, "Penny Squares" is Willa's first writing endeavor. She shows quilters how to create their own bit of history with the simple art of a Penny Square. For quilt historians, pattern collectors, and creative quilters, Willa tells stories and offers insight into the spirit of the quiltmakers' lives who developed the Penny Square designs. Her research concentrates on the pre-1915 Penny Square quilts where themes like flowers, animals, baskets, famous people, and nursery rhymes were all used in the same quilt.
