Review

Native American ribbonwork dates back to the 1600s when ribbons, scissors, needles and thread were among the European trade goods that French explorers used to barter for furs. American Indian women were quick to recognize the creative potential of those objects for embellishing clothing and eventually developed techniques that contemporary quilters will recognize as a variation of "strip piecing." Scarlet Ribbons combines a historical overview of this art form with a look at contemporary American Indian clothing made to wear at powwows and for everyday wear. In addition, instructions are given for eleven projects for garments, accessories, and home decorating accents. Illustrations include historical black and white photographs, full color "snap shots", step-by-step instructional photographs in color, and black & white illustrations. Full size templates for patterns and quilting designs are also provided. Scarlet Ribbons is a rare gem for those who enjoy and appreciate the historical significance of needlework crafts. -- Whispering Wind Magazine --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
