Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The germ of the idea of postcards as quilts began when the author experimented with fabric triptychs, in which antique postcards were superimposed on pieced fabric surfaces. The concept expanded from using postcards as collage elements to actually making a postcard with fabric. And what a challenge it is! An internationally recognized instructor, Warren has worked closely with quilters in Japan, and many of her samples depict Japanese locations, landscapes, and themes, along with regions in the U.S. Basic quilting skills are assumed; taught with thoroughness are value, color, and design skills. Paper postcards old and new are shown along with the finished fabric cards, always with ample discussion about each card's evolution and why certain fabric or color was chosen. Warren actually suggests that the fabric cards can be mailed, but this is a risk few would take, knowing the current reputation of the Postal Service! She does urge that the back of the postcard be addressed and decorated with postal embellishments to heighten the "official" quality of the finished work. This is a groundbreaking book for those who seek a guide for capturing the landscape and natural world in their work. Iva Freeman
