Review

MY FAVORITE QUILT BOOK RIGHT NOW! The market is flooded with books about how to make art quilts, especially all the trendy techniques of surface embellishment. While the quilts are almost always luscious, I often find that only a few techniques are covered and at a rather advanced level. That's why I'm so high on the new book Fabric Embellishing: The Basics & Beyond, because it covers more than 50 techniques with simple exercises and small projects. It takes four authors to pull this off: Ruth Chandler, Liz Kettle, Heather Thomas and Lauren Vlcek, each with different areas of expertise. Naturally you will find tutorials on standards like crazy quilting, beading, hand embroidery, 3-D applique and printing photos on fabric. But what's cool is the inclusion of up-to-the-minute techniques like rusting fabric and using new products like Transfer Artist Paper. There are many ways to use this resource. Just pick a few exercises and try them. Or form a small art quilt group and meet monthly for a group workshop. The authors suggest that you try one technique a week and create a special fabric workbook: the projects are all designed to make an 8 to 10 inch "journal quilt," so this can be easily done however many "pages" you complete. --Quilting Now Newsletter, Meg Cox; January, 2010

Beading, burning and felting oh my! This book, Fabric Embellishing The basics & beyond, is your passport to experimentation with the world of fabric collage, alteration and embellishment. If you re just starting to experiment with embellishment, or if you ve ever been embellishment curious, this is the book for you. For more advanced fiber artists, the book serves as a great embellishment encyclopedia and will soon be your go-to book when you re looking for a bit of inspiration. The wide variety of techniques and small project samples make it easy to try out a new technique without committing to a large project. Get out of your quilting comfort zone and try something new. This book may be just the thing to revitalize your quilting creativity. --Quilter's World Magazine; August, 2010

Fabric Embellishing The basics & beyond offers over 150 pages covering over 50 fabric embellishing techniques and features a large photo of an embellished workbook page that invites readers to try the technique, then add personal style. Step-by-step sequences are accompanied by a photo or illustration and a list of tools and materials, making for an outstanding coverage. --Midwest Book Review; February, 2010
